When and How to Get Your Realtor Code of Ethics Training

The National Association of Realtors requires all members to take 2.5 hours of Code of Ethics training in a two-year period. Here's how to fulfill that requirement.

The National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics was adopted in 1913, making NAR one of the first business groups to codify ethical standards. The code is designed to make sure customers are treated fairly and honestly as well as ensure cooperation among Realtors.

The Code of Ethics is updated periodically and Realtors are required to complete at least 2.5 hours of educational courses every three years, The courses must cover specific learning objectives and fulfill special criteria set by NAR.

The current three-year cycle began Jan. 1, 2019. The deadline for this cycle is Dec. 31, 2021.

Failure to meet the mandate is a violation of your Realtor membership requirements and will result in the suspension of membership until the requirement is met or until membership is terminated.

If you have taken New Member training during a three-year cycle, you aren't required to meet the Realtor Code of Ethics training requirement during the same two-year cycle.

Where to find classes

Training may be completed through your local Realtor association or board or through another method, such as home study, correspondence, classroom courses or online courses.

Local boards determine which types of educational formats are acceptable for taking the mandated training. Please check with your local board or association for specific requirements and course offerings.

NAR also offers approved Code of Ethics training online for existing members, new members and for continuing education credit.
